Awards for Apprentices

The National Apprenticeship Scheme (NAS) awards are set to take place this evening here in Blackburn. An exciting gathering of employers and potential apprentices, the event will encompass a wide range of work skills and provide new opportunities for local young people and businesses alike. Blackburn Youth Zone will be hosting the award ceremony.

After a sharp decline in popularity, the apprenticeship is enjoying a renaissance. The catch 22 situation of not having enough experience to get a job and therefore no way of getting experience can be neatly sidestepped by on-the-job training, benefitting both employer and employee. Apprentices earn qualifications as they progress in their chosen job, of which there are some 1,400 available to any UK resident over 16 who is not in full-time education. Taking between one and four years to complete, apprentices finish with a wealth of practical and theoretical experience, meaning they have become immensely employable.

The awards are to recognise the hard-work and commitment exhibited by apprentices and their employers. Now in its ninth year, NAS have established a reputation for highlighing the many benefits and success stories within the area of apprenticeships. Four employer categories from Small to Macro will see employers from all sectors compete for the awards and to feature in the prestigious top 100 Apprenticeship Employers list, published annually in the national press. There is a brand-new category this year open to former apprentices who have progressed well in their career after their apprenticeship was over.

Blackburn Youth Zone is a state-of-the-art purpose-built facility for young people where services range from sports and arts programmes to personal support and mentoring. The centre boasts high-specification equipment including a gymnasium, media centre and dance studio, all of which are accessible to any young person living in Blackburn or Darwen. Entirely focused on the needs of its users, Blackburn Youth Zone’s slogan is “Starting where young people are, going where young people take us”.

Unistage were recently excited to begin a relationship with Blackburn Youth Zone after they purchased staging systems from us. The stages are incredibly versatile and have already been configured and used in a number of ways at the centre; tomorrow they will be used to allow the awards ceremony to take place. Due to the large numbers of people expected to attend, the Youth Zone has also hired more portable modular staging to make sure there is plenty of room.

We would like to wish everyone involved with the awards good luck and congratulate everybody who has worked hard to make the apprenticeship scheme a success. Unistage are proud that our innovative, bespoke stages will be the foundation for this important event.
