Is your School Staging a Festive Performance?

The dark nights and colder weather seem to have crept up on us this year and thoughts are already turning to festive celebrations. Naturally, children are the most excited by Christmas and many schools channel this excitement into a performance which parents and guardians can come and watch. This presents an ideal opportunity for the school to showcase itself and its pupils.

A traditional Christmas performance is that of The Nativity; the word has its roots in the Latin word Natal, meaning birth. First performed in 1223 in a cave by St Francis of Assisi and the Italian monks who were his followers, The Nativity Play was originally designed to remind peasants that, as Jesus was similarly born into poverty, He was born for them. St Francis used wooden figurines to represent the various characters in the play as the monks sang; these songs would form the basis for many of the Christmas Carols still sung today. Nativity plays proved so popular that real people began to perform in the roles but the wooden figurines remained; they were displayed in a crib which is still a worldwide Christmas decoration today.

Multi-faith schools often opt for a more secular Christmas performance. A popular choice is A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, the well-known story that concerns the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge being convinced to change his ways by the visitation of three ghosts. Fairytales are often performed; Snow White and The Snow Queen being two of the most chosen pieces to stage due to their wintry connections.
